Many people say antiques are an alternative investment. It’s also way too expensive for anyone to start. Some say better buy property lah. Some people even remarked, ‘got people know how to appreciate meh?’ Haha. Actually an awesome property can be enhanced by a good piece of antique. It’s also far easier to buy and sell a piece of antique versus a home. Beginning today, 22 June 2018, we have an opportunity now to take a closer look at some of these antique items. Understand what’s happening to the Straits Chinese Antique scene, learn the historical value of the pieces and decide today or even a few years later if we want to bid / buy a couple of pieces.

We often hear of some paintings or banknotes being auctioned off for huge sums of money. These auctions usually happen in some advanced economies outside Malaysia. Actually, these asset auctions are already happening in Malaysia. The actions during these auctions are hot as well because the collectors are in the market because they would like to collect / own a piece of ‘history.’ During these auctions too we could see some new collectors and even the curious public. Many would have items in their possession which may be worth having it auctioned off to the highest bidder. The sellers could also choose to sell the item to individual collectors but in all these one to one transactions, the price would often be determined by the single seller instead of being offered to the highest bidder.
In the previous Straits Chinese Antique Auction conducted by MNP Auctioneers on 26th November 2017 in Penang, many items saw keen bidding interest and one such item, a ‘very rare lime green goldfish bowl’ started at RM15,000 but the bidding frenzy ended only at RM40,000. There are many more rare items which had new owners too. Based on the age of these items, it is very safe to conclude that every piece broken accidentally today or tomorrow meant that there is one less piece in this world, not just in Malaysia. Happy visiting and appreciating these items which are truly Malaysian, especially those items belonging to a Baba and Nyonya family.
