Press Release: GLOMAC Joins The Solution For Fabric Pollution
Kuala Lumpur, 30 April 2021 – As Malaysia progresses into another Movement Control Order (MCO), Glomac and SaltyCustoms have teamed up in an initiative by Kloth Cares to help control fabric wastes around the area of Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI).
Award-winning developer Glomac and custom apparel expert SaltyCustoms joined forces and officially launched a Fabric Bank located at Glo Damansara mall at the end of April. The initiative is in support of efforts by Kloth Malaysia Sdn Bhd, a local social entrepreneurship movement focused on keeping fabrics and plastics away from landfills through the circular economy business model.
“When we heard from SaltyCustoms about this movement and the idea to place a Fabric Bank in the vicinity of our main operational areas, we see a sustainable future where Glomac can do its part to care for mother nature,” said FD Idzham FD Iskandar, Senior Manager of Glomac’s Group Corporate Communications and Corporate Marketing unit.
The Fabric Bank initiative is part of the movement known as Kloth Cares Fabric Recycling Movement. Since its kick-off in August 2018, the effort has opened doors to many corporate entities to participate.
FD Idzham added that this is part of Glomac’s plans in expanding its sustainability programme for the Group. He further explained that this is the first of five of such Banks which Glomac plans to set up in their townships and developments.
“The more the merrier. We plan to implement more Fabric Banks in our townships such as Saujana Perdana in Bandar Saujana Utama and other developments, all of them in mature neighbourhoods. We believe this effort will receive tremendous support from the local communities,” added Encik Zulkifly Garib, Glomac’s Chief Operating Officer (Operations).
According to Kloth Malaysia in 2019, Malaysians produce up to 2,000 tonnes of textile wastes and other wearable products daily. This proves to be an issue as harmful greenhouse gas is released when textile waste decomposes. This greenhouse gas, known as methane, destroys the environment as it contributes to global warming.
The Fabric Bank accepts almost any kind of fabric donations. This includes shirts, jeans, bedsheets, and even plush toys. The collected items will then be sent to the sorting centre monthly, where they are sorted out, re-processed and re-distributed according to their new purposes.
Those living around TTDI and wishing to donate can come to Glo Damansara mall where the Fabric Bank can be found at the second LG entrance (opposite Desa Kiara Condominium/back entrance).
