Public transportation should be the way forward and will have to be the way how most people travel in the future. This should not happen just in Greater Kuala Lumpur but also in Penang (both island and mainland). We already have the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) for which the latest announcement is that the work on the Penang South Reclamation (PSR), Pan Island Link (PIL) and Light RailTransit (LRT) will start construction by Q4 2020. It’s not just these huge projects yeah. There’s also the hub called Penang Sental in Butterworth.
Article in nst.com.my MRCB Land chief executive officer Raymond Cheah shared that the phase 2 of the billion ringgit Penang Sentral integrated mixed-development project in Butterworth will go full swing next year. The second phase entails an office tower and retail mall. Cheah said that the office tower and retail component would serve as a catalyst to the transport hub in Butterworth.
He said, “We are accessing the market. We may start building the office tower first to build up the population before establishing the mall.” He added, “There is a cargo hub and oil depot. Further north is the North Butterworth Container Terminal, with berthing and storage capacity, while further south is the Prai industrial zone comprising light and heavy industries. We believe there will be additional requirements for office space, retail, and apartments.” The Penang Sentral is an integrated hub for bus, rail (KTM Bhd’s electric train service and Komuter train services) and sea transport and costs about RM230 million. Butterworth is definitely not a quiet place even if Penangites love to compare between the island the mainland and the islanders believe their food is the best while the mainlanders will disagree. Property prices continue to show a wide gulf with island being 30-40% more expensive usually. With continuous development and links, perhaps the price gap will be lower in the future. Not in the near future okay.
Another recent development in Penang island would be this: Eastern Seafront Development The more the merrier yeah. In the mean time, please focus on making the Penang International Airport much bigger than today yeah. Tourists need to come if Penang would like to have a vibrant economy and flights will need a bigger airport too. I wonder when will be my next trip back to Penang.
