This morning, I was listening to the radio as usual and the topic of property investment was being discussed. The DJ wanted callers to call in and tell him at what age did they buy their first property and the reason(s) they did. I think this is good because only the ones who has bought a property will call in and their sharing may encourage all other listeners who has yet to own a home to think a little more. I was right, a lady called in and happily shared the following. (Summarised for easy reading)
Caller: I was 24 when I bought my first property with my husband. Both of us feel that buying a property is a good thing to do.
DJ: Wow, you and your husband are amazing. So, how long did it take for you to save up for the property?
Caller: 1 year only because both of us were savers. We saved RM20,000 for the downpayment because the house was in Klang and it’s typically cheaper.
DJ: So, are you staying there now?
Caller: No, I rented it out because we are still staying with our parents.
DJ: Oh, you are not staying there, then why did you buy?
Caller: We think of it as an investment for the future.
The next caller said she started to buy a property when she was 21 and the DJ asked why did she buy a property when she was so young! The caller said she started working when she was 16 or 17 and thus managed to save some money for the property. She sold the property a few years ago and is now staying in a better home.
Dear DJs, if you are NOT ready to speak about a certain topic, it’s best not to speak about a certain topic. Property investment is something extremely worthwhile to do and these buyers showed that they are not speculators but are merely good examples for young working professionals too. Negative remarks even if you do it jokingly tells a lot about your understanding about property investment. Personally, I think if we stay with our parents, that’s even more advantageous to buy a property. Give part of the rental to our parents instead or bring them holidays every now and then. This is much more encouraging than spending all the money on something / whatever… Happy understanding.
