Yeah, border opening needs to start slowly

There are countries where the population alone is big enough to push the general consumption of goods and services and help businesses to keep growing. For example, China, India, Indonesia and definitely America too. Of course, they still need to trade with other nations too. For smaller nations like Malaysia, we need to expand the potential demand for goods and services and thus, it’s important to continue attracting Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) as well as tourists for example. Article in edgeprop.my . Malaysian Association of Hotels CEO Yap Lip Seng said, “Hotels that need to be closed, have already been closed. For those that have been temporarily closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic prevention measures, are reopening with the reintroduction of local travel.” He also stressed that hotels could not just depend on domestic travellers to survive.

The main reason is because according to Tourism Malaysia’s data, per capita expenditure of foreign tourists in 2019 was at RM3,300, while a domestic tourist only contributed RM804. Meanwhile referring to data published by the Department of Statistics Malaysia in September 2019 showed that in 2018, only less than 30% accommodation expenditure came from domestic tourism. Yesterday was the 2nd day that Malaysia has had zero local Covid-19 transmissions. Read it in malaymail.com here. As what our Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah has shared, in order for us to be declared totally free, we would need a total of 28 days of zero new cases. I think this is a very important milestone to have and we should continue to be vigilant at all times and please wear that mask and stop being difficult about it.

However, coming back to the economy. I think it is equally important that we continue to move forward towards normalisation, towards the economy recovery prior to the arrival of Covid-19. Opening of borders may be one of it but perhaps those suggestions to only start opening to ‘safe’ countries (similar to our Covid-19 situation or better) can be implemented sooner. As we wait for more details of this from the government, let’s just enjoy a video about why everyone should visit Malaysia. (you too, cuti-cuti Malaysia).
