Do we know how connected is Kuala Lumpur (KL) to Singapore (SG)? Referring to skyscanner.com.my, there are a total of 357 flights from KL to SG per week. That’s 51 per day. Taking out 8 hours of sleeping time, that’s still nearly 3 flights per hour. In other words, we may have a flight every 20 minutes. Yes, that’s how connected KL is to Singapore. When our High Speed Rail (HSR) is completed, we will have a service interval every 30 minutes!  Price wise, the cheapest fare for the flight from KL to SG was RM157. Total time taken is usually 50 minutes but as we know, we need to be at the airport 2 hours before the flight. We also need to travel at least 30 minutes earlier (via KL Sentral) or an hour for many other starting points. Waiting for luggage may take another 30 minutes. In total, we would need to spend nearly 4 hours for a flight.
According to an article in TheStar, the service interval between trains from KL to SG would be as short as 30 minutes! Here’s that report. KL – SG HSR to have train intervals of 30 minutes. Also, with the HSR, the duration is as short as 90 minutes. Adding 30 minutes to and fro, total time needed would be 2.5 hours. WIFI should be available all the way too, unlike flights. Or perhaps by the completion of HSR, all flights would allow internet access? According to MyHSR Corp project delivery director Mark Loader, the reason for this is based on projections made by the company, using the total flights per day between KL and Singapore as a benchmark. HSR’s construction will start in 2018 and will be completed by 2026. He also shared something interesting to me. He said, “The non-stop express service will reach Singapore in 90 minutes and passengers boarding at Bandar Malaysia station will be able to clear Singapore Immigration before boarding.” (Immigration clearance within KL itself!)  Besides that, there are eight stations built along the 350km line – in Bandar Malaysia, Bangi-Putrajaya, Seremban, Melaka, Muar, Batu Pahat, Iskandar Puteri and Jurong East in Singapore. Here’s that full report in TheStar.
The more connected we are, the better it is for the property market. Haha. Seriously, it’s even possible to stay in KL and work in SG. Before you try to tell me that I am crazy, please ask Japanese office workers in Tokyo first. My ex-GM travels over 400km every day to and fro work.  Okay, perhaps Malaysians or Singaporeans are not used to such travels since to and fro would already be 700km. However 90 minutes is the typical time taken for many when they drive to work every morning or after work everyday. Haha. Would it be great for property markets along all the cities along the line? Seriously, it depends on what’s happening in those cities / towns okay. Please do not buy land / properties along the line and wait. I personally think that’s too speculative. Happy following and perhaps travelling with the HSR when it starts. PLEASE make sure the tickets are affordable yeah.
