Yesterday, there was that ‘travel bubble’ suggestion which our Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Economy) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said the government has yet to finalise its decision on the ‘travel bubble’ proposal. Article here. Travel Bubble meant that we have an arrangement for countries within this ‘bubble’ to allow travelling between overseas. The countries said to be in this proposal for travel bubble is Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia.
Today, we have our Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah saying that Malaysia has begun discussions with six ‘green’ countries so that both countries could open its borders to one another. He revealed that the six countries were Singapore, Brunei, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea. This is because these countries have successfully controlled the COVID-19 situation and the total number of new infections are under control.
He said, “We need to discuss and finalise the SOP (standard operating procedure) between the countries. For example, do we need to quarantine the arrivals? Any SOP must be mutual and reciprocal. We are still in an early stage of discussion (with these countries). Both sides need to agree on the conditions. If we can do that, we can allow the business, education and tourism sectors to be opened up (between the countries).” Please do refer to the full Article in thestar.com.my
Of course, we should also help the local economy by travelling within the country first. However, we need to understand as well that allowing foreign visitors (from COVID-19 safe countries) will really help in helping the badly hit tourism industry. I think we are already tired of reading news about hotels being closed down, right? Well, I do want to know how this discussion would go because Australia had just said that it intends to close its borders until end of the year. Happy following.
