When Earth gets too expensive, let’s move to Mars! Okay, how much?

Sorry, I will not treat this as serious because there’s just too many places on Earth which I would love to visit before I say bye-bye to this world. Definitely not looking to stay in a red coloured planet yet. Want to know what it’s like to live in Mars? A man survived and I could say thrived too. Keyword: potatoes.

However, it seems that space travel is not going to be limited to just flying out into space, gaze at whatever the space has to offer and come back safely. Now, the option may just include a stay in Mars too. Well, at least that’s what going to be offered in the future anyway.

Article in cnbc.com Elon Musk is “confident” moving to Mars will “one day” cost less than $500,000 (RM2.07 million) and “maybe even” cost below $100,000 (RM414,000). He says that the cost to move to Mars will “low enough that most people in advanced economies could sell their home on Earth [and] move to Mars if they want.” (The median home price in the U.S. is $223,900, according to Zillow.)

Musk said the final cost will be “very dependent on the volume” of travellers. He was commenting on a Twitter thread about the Raptor engine (the engine which will power the rocket’s travel to Mars) has achieved “power level needed for Starship and Super Heavy.” The “aspirational goal” for SpaceX is to send the first rocket to Mars (with cargo only) in 2022, according to SpaceX’s website. The second mission, which will take more cargo and crew, is aiming to go in 2024. Please do read a lot more details in the Article in cnbc.com

Okay, I personally think it’s fine that a few hundred thousand people from some of these advanced economies could and would pay to uproot themselves from earth and stay in Mars. I would welcome it too. After these early adopters, the cost will definitely be even lower and that’s perhaps a good thing for Earth. (in case we really have to move when it’s no longer inhabitable).

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said that our sun is already halfway through its life: “If our Sun is and a half billion years old, how much longer will it shine? Stars like our Sun burn for about nine or 10 billion years. So our Sun is about halfway through its life. But don’t worry. It still has about 5,000,000,000—five billion—years to go.” After this, it will be 2,000 times brighter than it is today. If you already feel hot today, imagine that!

Coming back to reality. The cost in the beginning even if we wanted to go is likely to be extremely prohibitive to most of everyone. Stay grounded, keep working, investing and buying that property okay. Happy understanding.
