Langkawi – Airasia hub, Best Airport award, FASTER duty-free

I never knew there’s a best airport category for under two million passengers in Asia Pacific. The most amazing thing is, Langkawi International Airport (LIA) has won it twice. The actual award is Airport Council International Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Award 2014. That is indeed a good news and I do think Langkawi’s airport is clean but could really do with MORE passengers. It feels empty everytime I am there and I do drop by Langkawi on a yearly basis. Perhaps this may change because Air Asia has recently said that it will be making Langkawi one of its international hubs.
Besides this potential new hub news, LIA will also be upgraded under the 11th Malaysia Plan. In 2014, 2.2 million passengers used LIA and this is expected to continue in 2015. In fact recently, Hotel St. Regis as well as Langkawi International Convention Centre was completed too. Main attraction in Langkawi is still the fact that it is a duty free island. Recent news indicated that the Finance ministry is planning to reduce the time limit to qualify for duty-free goods for both local and foreign tourists in Langkawi. The 48-hour requirement for foreign tourists would be reduced to 24 hours while the 72-hour requirement for locals would become just 48 hours.
Well if you are visiting, how long would you need to stay? I would always propose that you keep the trips short enough so that you would come again and again. Some of the stuffs I propose. List is non-exhaustive. Take a cute or fantastic photo with the HUGE eagle at Dataran Lang. Langkawi Cable car and the Langkawi SkyBridge is a MUST as the view is fantastic. Underwater World in Langkawi is worth a visit if you are bringing kids. Hop around in Langkawi islands via speedboat, for example the Dayang Bunting Lake or even Pulau Payar. I have a little fear when I saw the Dayang Bunting lake but what the heck, I still jumped in for a swim. As for Pulau Payar, the experience of having fishes swimming around you is very memorable. Telaga Tujuh Waterfall is ONLY suitable for regular hikers because it is a steep and tough climb for those who are not used to exercise, so please take care. Buy, buy and buy perfumes, chocolates and Vision cooking pots. Happy visiting Langkawi.
