30,000 people to be unemployed this year?

In the competitive world of today, businesses which has been around for a very long time may not be around forever. From Walmart to Toys R Us and even the few famous handphone brands. When companies are no longer competitive, this meant jobs are no longer secure. The reason for uncompetitiveness may be due to many reasons but the reason for the unemployed is really due to the person. Let us remember that the days where we do the same thing day in day out and get paid every month as well as increments every year are long gone. Today, everyday we work, we should add value so that the company could move us around and thinks of us as a talent rather than a ‘worker.’

Article in NST here. Human Resource Minister M. Kula Segaran said the claim that 30,000 people will become unemployed is not true. He said that less than 24,000 unemployment positions were recorded last year. He said, “The unemployment rate shows nothing unusual, nothing frightening.” MEF executive director Shamsuddin Bardan recently estimated that 30,000 workers are to lose their jobs, while citing the increasing cost of doing business as the main reason for the great number. Shamsuddin said the economy within and without Malaysia was a challenge for employers to maintain their profitability. Article in NST here.

A check in Malaysia’s leading job portal, JobStreet.com reveals that the number of positions which companies are hiring are over 25k currently. In other words, the total jobs available are far higher than the number of roles. This is just one job portal. I think even if the 30,000 number unemployment prediction happens, the more important thing is for the economy to grow and thereby produce more job opportunities so that these people could then move on to the next job quickly. As for everyone who’s working today, what have we been doing differently this year than the last? It’s all about competitiveness or nothing is left
