Seriously, how many malls do we need in the Klang Valley? Or specifically within Cheras and both are ONLY 800 metres away from one another? Should we even buy KL properties due to new malls these days? Well, two more coming up in Cheras and they have over 2million sq ft net lettable area (NLA) between them. They are MyTOWN Shopping Centre and Sunway Velocity Mall. So Cheras folks, they should be spoilt for choice. Of course as of now, due to the MRT work, the jam on the main road has increased but perhaps shopping may soothe some of the tension from being stuck in a jam.
By the way, these two mall are also pretty near to the Kuala Lumpur city centre or other malls such as Suria KLCC, Berjaya Times Square and Pavilion. Well, looking at just three malls which I have been to, I personally think the two new malls in Cheras should still be doing fine. Let’s hope they price their parking rates RIGHT. The two developers for these two malls are not new players. They include Boustead Ikano for MyTOWN Shopping Centre while Sunway Velocity Mall as per the name is by the Sunway Group. the current two malls in Cheras? They are Leisure Mall and Aeon Maluri shopping centre.
I think Sunway Shopping Malls & Theme Parks chief executive officer H.C. Chan sums it quite convincingly as he said, he sees the presence of IKEA and MyTown as a creation of another shopping corridor in KL. This is similar to that in Mutiara Damansara with The Curve, IKEA, IPC. He said, “Fundamentally, the real issue is the absence of lifestyle and experiential malls in Cheras and that is where Sunway Velocity Mall fills the void. Both are also opening 18 days apart. Sunway Velocity Mall is opening 28 October while MyTOWN Shopping Centre will open on 15 November. Both malls have 6,500 parking bays.
Let’s look at the anchor tenants. Sunway Velocity Mall has Parkson, TGV Cinemas, Harvey Norman, Popular book store and Toys “R” Us. MyTOWN Shopping Centre Village Grocer, Golden Screen Cinema, Mango and Uniqlo. Have you decided yet? Actually, go both, see which one we like more. Many times, certain malls may have more of those brands that we like and we tend to go there more often. However, I have never shopped at just one mall thus far even if my favourite remains to be 1 Utama. Will write again after I have visited both malls yeah. Any comments, please feel free to write too okay. Happy anticipating.
