MM2H is FROZEN… Oh dear. Could we kill more birds with one stone?

Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme is frozen. Briefly, stopped. No new applications would be accepted and there is that news that 90% of all the applications have been rejected. MM2H is a programme to allow allow foreigners who fulfill certain criteria, to stay in Malaysia on a multiple-entry social visit pass. The social visit pass is initially for a period of ten (10) years, and is renewable. There are no talks that there are any changes to the current MM2H participants who were approved earlier and is now enjoying their second home, Malaysia.

Article in freemalaysiatoday.com Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Nancy Shukri said thatThe Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) programme in the tourism ministry is temporarily frozen for review and improvement by the federal government. The MM2H centre in the tourism ministry had been closed until further notice.

Nancy however said that MM2H is frozen for a review of all the activities and processes involved in the approvals for the programme. She said that the federal government hopes to improve the programme and that the immigration department is now reviewing the process. The target is to get everything done by December 2020. She said, “It’s not a permanent closure because it is for the good of our country’s economy.” Do read the full Article in freemalaysiatoday.com

Somehow I think the MM2H agency operators may like an answer beyond just ‘reviewing of the process for improvement.” Perhaps it is also time that we stop all these “by December” remark and becoming more like the current Finance Ministry where there are progress updates on how much funds have been disbursed under the Prihatin, under the Penjana and even on the all the meetings with the industry players about what could be done further to help economic recovery.

I support MM2H programme but I think it’s time we enhance the programme further. For example, we may want to run the MM2H programme together with tertiary education programmes for the children of the participants. I am not sure why we have yet to start doing it. I mean Malaysia is the only country which I know where students could get local private university degrees, UK university degrees, Australian university degrees and even Chinese university degrees by studying here. (Did I miss any?)

Aim for parents with kids who are about to go to the university and get them here. Joint promotion between the tourism ministry and the higher education ministry and we could now kill two birds with one stone. Beyond just the children, it is time that we also start attracting the professionals who are still active (not just retired ones). Those researchers… niche talents… and more. This is where the tourism ministry could work with our TalentCorp. If this could be done, we can save funds and kill three birds with one stone. Yes, if the tourism ministry needs me to join their brainstorming session, do invite yeah.
