Press Release – Sunway City named among top smart city initiatives in Asia Pacific
~Sunway City wins as Integrated Smart and Low-Carbon Township in the IDC Smart City Asia Pacific Awards (SCAPA) alongside Hong Kong~
Sunway City, 21 August 2017 – Malaysia’s Sunway City has been recognised as Top Smart City Initiative in Asia Pacific excluding Japan (APeJ) under the Smart Buildings category by IDC Government Insights, a leading market intelligence and advisory firm for IT, telecommunications and consumer technology markets. Sunway City won as an Integrated Smart and Low-Carbon Township, alongside category winner Zero Carbon Building from Hong Kong.
The transformation from a wasteland made barren from tin-mining activities into the wonderland that it is today, has made Sunway City a model of sustainability for other township developments in the region. Sunway City is Malaysia’s first fully integrated green township as certified by Green Building Index in 2012, and was named a Low Carbon City by the Malaysian Institute of Planners in 2016.
Sunway City has come a long way in the last four decades and now hosts a thriving community of 200,000 who live, learn, work, play, be healthy and safe in a connected environment.
Its development is deeply intertwined with the rise of the Sunway Group, as it has organically spurred the growth of Sunway’s 12 diverse businesses, making it one of Malaysia’s leading conglomerates today.
“In all our endeavours, sustainability and social responsibility have been an integral part of our business framework as we expand our presence worldwide and work towards a sustainable future. Sunway is committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and I hope to continue creating positive impact on our cities and communities within Malaysia and beyond in line with the SDGs,” says Tan Sri Cheah.
Sunway is setting out to make its mark in advancing the SDGs in the region through the Jeffrey Sachs Center on Sustainable Development (JSC), which was launched at Sunway University in November 2016. The JSC was set up as part of a strategic partnership between the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation and the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, initiated and driven by Tan Sri Cheah, who has become a champion of sustainability in the region.
Sunway City’s sustainable integrated township model has been successfully adapted across the country evident in the 1,350-acre lush Sunway City Ipoh, and the upcoming 1,800-acre Sunway Iskandar developments. Sunway City is now intensifying efforts through various smart initiatives which will set the blueprint for future smart cities in Malaysia, ASEAN and beyond.
Now on its third year, SCAPA recognises the most outstanding smart city projects in APeJ across a total of 14 functional smart city award categories. However, 18 projects were named as the best in APeJ as IDC saw intensified competition in four categories and where a tie was declared this year. These categories are Administration, Education, Land Use and Environmental Management, and Smart Buildings.
Sunway Group’s smart city project, Sunway City, was among the 130 high-quality smart city initiatives submitted for this award by local governments, vendors and the public across the APeJ region, and was amongst the 46 shortlisted initiatives eligible to the final public voting phase.
“Among the strong contenders in the Smart Buildings category of the 3rd annual IDC Smart City Asia Pacific Awards (SCAPA) 2017, Sunway’s ‘Integrated Smart and Low-Carbon Township’ stood out a key mega-project that showcased the use of innovative technologies to better address the management of building ecosystem-wide infrastructures. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Sunway on its well-deserved win by securing votes from IDC analysts, the SCAPA adjunct council as well as public opinion polls,” says Gerald Wang, Head of IDC Government and Education Insights Asia Pacific.
IDC launched the Smart City Development Index to help establish the fundamental causes of birth, evolution, and survival of key cities in the region. Part of this research includes identifying the top smart city initiatives in Asia Pacific and recognising deserving countries and organisations through SCAPA.
IDC Government Insights went through a rigorous six-phased benchmarking exercise to determine the Top Smart City projects for 2016-17. These included identifying and cataloguing the key Smart City projects in Asia Pacific by IDC Analysts across APeJ (25%), online voting to determine public opinion (50%), and the assessment of an International Advisory Council (25%).
