LRT, PIL and PSR will start in Q4 2020.

Penang has a catalytic masterplan called Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP). Within this plan are the Light Rail Transit (LRT), Pan Island Link (PIL) and the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) projects. The project delivery partner (Pdp) is SRS Consortium. A project delivery partner is basically the project manager who will ensure the projects are completed on time. Within this SRS Consortium would be Gamuda Berhad who was the Pdp for MRT Sungai Buloh – Kajang (SBK) and the project was completed ahead of schedule.

Article in malaymail.com Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said that the state government expects the construction work on the light rail transit (LRT), Pan Island Link (PIL) and Penang South Reclamation (PSR) projects under the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) to begin by Q4 2020. He said, “We, together with SRS Consortium, are hoping to sign the agreement for the projects (soon).”

He also shared that the reclaimed land of Gurney Coast will be ready by April. The proposed LRT will cover 27 stations and 29.9km, running from Komtar to the Penang International Airport, including to the three future reclaimed islands in the south of Penang under the PSR. The PSR is a 1,821 hectares of three man-made islands and this will be to fund the PTMP. The PIL1 is a 19.5km-long toll-free highway alignment from Gurney Drive to Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway near the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone IV area. Yea, there are still controversies surrounding the PSR currently which is said to be a threat to the environment. I think we will see how the state will be engaging the NGOs moving forward because the estimated Q4 is still many months away. If based on just my Penangite friends, they are generally supportive of the PTMP even if most of them are not familiar with the plans beyond just an LRT, 3 new islands and a new toll free expressway. Happy following.
