Internet cities? What’s that, really?
We have the internet which continues to have an explosive growth in users and penetration. We also have property development where many are being pitched as self-sustaining new townships where people could work, play, grow and even have fun without the need to drive to the city centre everyday. Now there’s this new term called Internet Cities which I read for the first time. It’s something which Iskandar Waterfront Holdings Sdn Bhd (IWH) and Catch Group Sdn Bhd is exploring together.
Article in nst.com.my Internet Cities are said to be designed as technology biz gateways for global tech giants and it will specificially cater to the needs of the local and regional digital start-up and growth businesses. Iskandar Waterfront Holdings Sdn Bhd (IWH) and Catcha Group Sdn Bhd have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore building Internet Cities and technology hubs across South-East Asia.
IWH and Catcha said in a statement today that the Internet Cities will be designed as technology business gateways for global tech giants from the US, China and other major economies who are targeting South-East Asia. The two companies in a statement said that the collaboration will allow the team to research successful Internet Cities and tech hubs in Paris, Silicon Valley and Shenzhen for ideas and inspiration. For Malaysia, Johor and Kuala Lumpur are the first choice for the project. Do read the article in full here: Article in nst.com.my
It’s not the internet, it’s the environment
By the way, I think what they are saying is that these will be hubs for technology start-ups. It’s not just a place with fast internet speeds yeah. If it’s just fast internet speeds, many already have this. However, if there is a place where the internet speed is super duper fast and then there are also 500 start-ups within the city and all these start-up founders work, meet and learn from one another everyday, then yeah, we are on to something.
Of course, we can also say, oh… something like Cyberjaya? Hey, that does sound familiar but probably Cyberjaya was aimed at getting big multinationals but this internet city, I think it is aimed at start-ups. Lots and lots of them, all within one place and we will then see an explosive growth. Let’s look forward to hearing more before I make any conclusion. Who knows it may just attract me to think and do more?
