I like the EPF dividends for year 2020.

EPF dividends for year 2020 (how they invested our money) is 5.2% for conventional and 49% for shariah. Most of the comments for EPF dividends seem to be positive but there are also some who said that it should have been higher. I think everyone has their own opinions but here are 7 reasons why this very commendable. Thank you to everyone in EPF who has worked hard to achieve this result. My earlier article here: We could do better than EPF for dividends? Sure go ahead. Let’s read the announcement as per media as below and my thoughts after that.

Article in freemalaysiatoday.com. The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) has announced dividends of 5.2% for conventional savings and 4.9% for shariah accounts for 2020. The dividend is higher than the Amanah Saham Nasional Bhd’s 4.25%. It is also higher than the fixed deposits in the banks too which ranges from 1.8% to 2.2% depending on the amount and period. Of course when compared to 2019, then it is a little lower. In 2019, it was 5.45% and 5% for conventional and shariah respectively. Article in freemalaysiatoday.com.

Very encouraging indeed. This is more than 200% higher than the Fixed Deposit (FD) rate. Both the EPF and the FD are considered safe investments with the FD having no minimum and the EPF has to give a minimum of 2.5% returns to all depositors. This is mandated under the EPF Act 1991. (Earlier article here)

Despite a very challenging year. 2020 is indeed not a great year. Thus, the ability to still declare any dividends above 5% is really a commendable feat. It meant that EPF did manage to invest into some good assets for the continuous returns and did NOT speculate too much (which they should now) and either earn us a super high return or perhaps losing money.

If you still think it’s low and you could do better externally, EPF actually allows members to choose yeah. I would be very happy for you if the returns are indeed better than EPF. Good job. Just remember not to blame them later for being the one who ‘forced’ you to withdraw our because you think the returns were low. Happy investing everyone.

I like and agree with your last statement which EPF contributor should be happy and thankful for 5.2% dividend. The whole country went through a very challenging 2020 but managed to pull through.
So it’s a big Yes and Thank You to EPF team.
