Cameron Highlands, a heavy downpour and the power of nature

I think I go up Cameron Highlands twice per year. When I posted an article about Cameron Highlands the other day, it was clicked and viewed by a surprisingly large number of people. I guess Cameron Highlands is a favourite place of many. Here’s that article: Cameron Highland and the over 10,000 cars per day!  I think Malaysia needs some measures to ensure Cameron Highland’s growth is on a measured pace. We want the goose to keep laying eggs for a long time. We do not want to destroy it by forcing it to lay too many eggs per day. Over-development will not help the cause yeah. Here’s another reason why. One heavy downpour exposes the power of nature. (Featured image by https://www.bohtea.com/about/home-of-boh/)
Yesterday, as per an article in TheStar.com.my here, a mudslide happened in KM42 on Jalan Simpang Pulai – Cameron Highlands. At press time (means just before the newspaper gets printed), half of the road was still closed to traffic as the mud was still flowing down the hill slope. Fortunately the rain has stopped. It quoted Cameron Highlands Fire and Rescue Services Department chief Mohd Hilmi Kashfi as saying that the incident happened at about 2.45pm after a heavy rain that began at about noon. He said, “A concrete retaining wall broke as a result of the rain, sending a river of mud water down the hill slope. No casualties were reported,” he said here on Wednesday (Sept 26). His advice is for motorists heading to or from Cameron Highlands to be careful as the work to clean up the debris from the road is still underway. Do view the video below:

Oh yeah, some time back, this was what our previous Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri G. Palanivel said. The government wants to plant 1 million trees instead of more high-rise buildings or hotels. I wonder how many has been planted since then. Hopefully our new YB Yeo Bee Yin, Minister of Energy, Technology, Science, Climate Change and Environment would have even better plans for Cameron Highlands and actually tell us the progress on a periodical basis. My next visit up Cameron Highlands should be happening soon. Cooling, relaxing and just eating… why not right?
