Talented, Skilled and Affordability? Think Penang

Malaysians who are talented and skilled, would you want to consider working in Penang instead? Well, the Penang government is welcoming these talented and skilled to work in Penang and they would allow them to apply for the affordable housing scheme for the talented and skilled. Of course, you would have to change your voting address to Penang first. One does not even necessarily have 5 years of working experience in Penang.
The current requirement for applicants to the affordable housing scheme is that the person should be a Penangite, employed in Penang and be a registered voter in Penang. If they are not Penangite, they must show proof that they have been residing and working in Penang for the last 5 years and have registered as a voter in Penang. In other words, the latest category would enlarge the pool of applicants but also help Penang to retain these talented and skilled workers.
This is a proposal by Invest Penang and it caters to anyone categorised as knowledge workers with a diploma with a minimum of 2 years work experience or a minimum of bachelor degree recognised by the government. If you are moving in from other states, the 5 years of working experience within Penang can be waived too and these applicants can choose the affordable housing units close to their working place! This helps to ensure Penang hits its aspiration to be an international and intelligent city. One final requirement, once one has obtained the said affordable unit, one must PROMISE to continue working in Penang for the next 5 years from the date that the key is handed over. I seriously do not think this is easy to keep track and implement but we shall see.
Penang is a good place to work, especially for engineers because there are lots of options. Thus opportunities are endless and I have friends who are already top management in many of the multinationals there. Of course, having said that, if you can rise up fast in your career, then your need for affordable housing may not be there anymore. You may prefer a landed property in a more prime area instead. 5 years from today, perhaps a condo may be a better bet. Why? Read here: Landed in Penang?
