15th city in Malaysia about to be declared. Where is it?

I hail from Ipoh, the city which tin mine built. A city I am proud to call home and a city I will definitely stay most of the time after I retire. It’s the third largest city in Malaysia based on population size. There are 14 cities in Malaysia today. How does a town get its status upgraded to a city?

“Among the basic criteria for granting City status on a local government is that it has a minimum population of 500,000 and an annual income of not less than RM 100 million. For a municipal status, the minimum population is 150,000 with an annual income of not less than RM 20 million. These are the latest criteria approved during the State Council Meeting for Local Government in June 2008. Source here.

The 15th city in Malaysia is about to happen. This is as per our Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin.

Article in edgeprop.my here. That city is Ampang. Zuraida shared that this should happen in 2020. She said, “Only one criteria that they have to qualify which is a university in the area, but the ministry is willing to look into it because there are so many private higher learning institutions in Ampang.”

Currently, there are 14 cities in Malaysia and they are Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Alor Star, Johor Bahru, Melaka city, Kuala Terengganu, Kota Kinabalu, Miri, Kuching North, Kuching South, Balik Pulau and Seberang Prai. Zuraida said that Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) has met the other requirements of administering a population of over 500,000 people and recording a revenue of RM100 million from its 24 localities. Thus the city status may be granted next year. Do refer to the Article in edgeprop.my here

Okay, soon we will have Majlis Bandaraya Ampang Jaya (MBAJ). So will the property prices be rising? Actually, a city status is just showing that the city has grown to a certain size. In other words, due to the population, the number of available properties would have already gone up before this. Thus, it’s safe to say that the city is mature enough and already have amenities needed by a growing population and is likely to attract more population to stay within Ampang Jaya too. Happy understanding.
